Beginners Beekeeping Six Week Course

Theory modules

The theory modules will be delivered over 6 sessions (approximately 2.5 hours each). Courses to run from Wednesday 6th March 2024 from 6 pm.

The sessions will cover all the basic elements of beekeeping, including:

  • history of honey bees and beekeeping
  • basic knowledge of honey bee biology
  • different types of hives and methods of beekeeping
  • swarming management, different activities through the season
  • bee health, pests & diseases

The content will follow recommendations from the British Beekeepers Association.

Tutor: The modules will be delivered by Bruno Hannemann, an experienced beekeeper and trainer.

Location: The course will take place at Hutton Wandesley Stables, Hutton Wandesley, York YO26 7NA

Materials: Presentations, handouts and any other materials will we produced/supplied by the tutor. Students are required to bring their own material for taking notes.

Cost: £250.00 (no VAT) per trainee.

Included in the price is a copy of the ‘BBKA Guide to Beekeeping’ for each trainee.

Practical sessions

Practical sessions will be arranged at dates and times to be agreed, depending on when the bees will be available (approx. 1 – 1 1/2 hours). The practical session will teach you all aspects of how to handle your bees and take home with you your own colony of bees.

We recommend a minimum of 4 practical sessions, to get all the trainees familiarised with the handling of the bees. More sessions can be arranged on an ad hoc basis.

Cost: £160.00 (no VAT) per trainee for the practical sessions.

The beekeeping package which includes all the equipment and your bees will be approx. £600 (2024 prices yet to be released).

The package includes:

  • Nuc of bees on 6 frames (poly nuc included)
  • Hive – cedar or poly to choose (floor, 1 x brood box, 2 x supers, queen excluder, crown board, roof, entrance reducer)
  • 22 x SN4 frames flat pack & wired foundation
  • 11 x DN4 frames flat pack & wired foundation
  • 2 x National Shallow Dummy Board
  • 1 x national deep dummy board
  • 2 x heavy duty ratchet straps
  • Full size rapid feeder
  • Stainless steel hive tool
  • Stainless steel smoker
  • Uncapping fork
